“East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet”— sighed the Indian-born English poet and novelist Rudyard Kipling in his poem The Ballad of East and West. While the British imperialism’s literary spokesman, Mr. Kipling saw no possibility of integration of the East and the West, the Republic of China heralds a new era of global community with a shared destiny for mankind. He also mentions a note of caution that in the face of global problems, no country could stay safe by taking care of itself alone.
